Introduction by David McAlister

The available history of Irish chess has many gaps in it. The aim of this website is to gather together information on the events and personalities that have shaped Irish chess. While the research is mainly focused on official competitions organised by the Irish Chess Union and the provincial Unions, I would like to stress that this is a private initiative, not connected to any of those bodies.

I have decided not to collect results from certain events that are of a restricted character (University Championships, Schools/Youth events, Women's Championships, internal club competitions) from this research project. Also where an event has more than one section, I intend only to list the standings in the top section.

UPDATE 2011: This website had been largely dormant since then end of 2004. However, I am now commencing a major revision and update.
